    Meeting the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa
The 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje was born in 1983 and recognized as the incarnation of Karmapa by Shamar Rinpoche. Shamar Rinpoche is the second highest teacher of the Karma Kagyu lineage and is responsible for finding the reincarnated Karmapa. In spring 1994 the eleven-year-old 17th Karmapa was able to leave Chinese occupied Tibet and was brought to India. There, he learns Buddhist teachings and rituals, as well as receiving a Western education including working with computers, new media and English. In December 1996 he gave his first large ceremony in Bodhgaya, India, with several thousand participants from the Himalayas and around the world.

In October 1997 he was invited to Buthan by the Buthanese Royal Family to give teachings and initiations. On the way to the capital of Buthan, Thimpu, thousands of people gathered to receive his blessing. In late 1999 Thaye Dorje started his first big tour to East Asia and Europe to visit his many students. There were over 4000 people in Singapur, 500 of which took Buddhist refuge from Karmapa.
